The Prayers Nobody Wrote Down

This message is for the faith that came to you through a grandmother who never wrote a word of it down, which you have quietly treated as less than the real thing

She prayed over him every night of his childhood and he could not tell you one word of it.

Not because he was not listening. Because it was not in a language he could write down, and because it was not the kind of thing anybody thought to write down, and because she did not do it in a building or from a book or in front of anybody.

She did it with her hand on his head, in the dark, in a house that is not there any more.

He is forty-six now, and he has spent his adult life in rooms where faith is a thing you can show. Where people have a plan, and a course they did, and a shelf, and a way of saying things that sounds like it came from somewhere.

And he has this, which is the whole of what he was given: an old woman's hand, in the dark, in words he did not fully understand and has forgotten anyway.

He would never say out loud that it does not count. If you accused him of thinking that he would be genuinely upset, and he would defend her fiercely, and he would mean every word.

But watch what he actually does. He never mentions her when he talks about how he came to faith. He starts the story about fifteen years later, at a thing he went to, with a speaker whose name people would recognize.

That is what it looks like when a man has quietly decided that his own inheritance does not count as evidence.

So let me ask you.

Who prayed for you in a way that nobody ever wrote down?

The Prayers Nobody Wrote Down

Paul put two women's names in a letter

Paul is writing to a young man he loves, from prison, near the end of his life, and he is telling him to keep going.

And in the middle of it he does something that I do not think we notice, because it is so small and so warm.

I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.2 Timothy 1:5

Two names. A grandmother and a mother, named in a letter that is now Scripture, by an apostle in a cell.

And think about what Paul is doing. He is establishing Timothy's standing, in a hard moment, when the young man is wobbling. He could have appealed to Timothy's ordination. He could have appealed to the elders who laid hands on him, and in fact he mentions that in the very next verse.

He appeals to his grandmother first.

Lois never wrote anything. There is not one line of hers in the Bible. We do not know what she said, or in what language she said it, or whether she was any good at explaining what she believed. There is no record whatsoever of what she taught him, and there never will be.

And Paul says the faith lived in her first, and he uses that verb on purpose. Not was taught by. Lived in.

Now hear what that makes true of you.

You are not standing on nothing. Scripture names a grandmother as the first place a faith lived and does it in a letter to a wobbling man who needed a floor under his feet, and the Spirit He poured out has never once required a thing to be written down before He would carry it.

And I want to name the wound underneath, gently, the way we do here, because if I skip it the encouragement will not hold.

The reason you start the story fifteen years later is not that you are ashamed of her. It is that somewhere along the line you absorbed the idea that a real account has documents in it. That the things that count are the things that got recorded, in the language of the people who did the recording.

Some of that came to you honestly and some of it came to you with a history attached, and I am not going to unpick all of that tonight and I am certainly not going to prosecute anybody for it. But you can put it down.

What that woman did in the dark with her hand on your head was not the preface to your faith.

The word says it lived in her, and what lives is not a preface.

The fire this house is named for fell in a stable in Los Angeles in 1906, and almost nothing that happened in that room was written down by the people it happened to. The newspapers wrote about it, unkindly and inaccurately. The people themselves mostly told each other, out loud, and it traveled that way for years before anybody documented anything.

The most undocumented room of that century is the one everything came out of.

And you are standing on something and not on nothing. Second Timothy names a grandmother as the first place that faith lived, in a letter written to steady a wobbling man, and the Spirit never once needed a thing written down before He would carry it.

The breakthrough

So here is what I am actually asking.

Start the story where it actually starts.

That is the whole thing. Next time somebody asks how you came to faith, do not begin at the event with the speaker whose name they would know. Begin with an old woman's hand in the dark, and let it be the first sentence and not the footnote.

You are not upgrading her. She does not need it. You are correcting a record you have been quietly falsifying for years out of a sense that the real version needed better sources.

Second Timothy says the faith lived in Lois first and Paul put her name in a letter that outlived them all. The Holy Spirit poured out on all people fell hardest on a room nobody documented.

What you were given is not a lesser kind of thing.

You have been given a real inheritance and it was never a lesser kind. The word chose the verb lived rather than taught, and the Spirit who kept that hand on your head in the dark is the same One standing on this shore with you now.

Declare this over yourself

Say these where you can hear yourself. Know what holds them up. This authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King. And you speak under His will, never over it. However He answers, and in whatever way He comes, the outcome is His.

  1. Silence in the record, you are not evidence of nothing. Second Timothy 1 names a grandmother as the first place that faith lived, and Paul put her in a letter when a young man needed a floor under his feet.
  2. Habit of starting my own story fifteen years late, you have been quietly falsifying a record and you are stopped today. In the name of Jesus I put you down, and the Spirit has never needed a thing written down before He would carry it.
  3. Lord, Second Timothy 1 has a whole faith living in a woman who left no documents at all, and Your Spirit carried it to me without one word of it ever being written down. I am saying her name out loud today with no disclaimer on it, and her hand in the dark was the beginning.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
