The Line That BrokeIsaiah 56:7

The Court Nobody Swept

This message is for the part of your own life where somebody not like you is supposed to be able to find God, and what you have quietly let fill it up

The temple had a wall in it, and the wall had a sign.

Not a metaphor. An actual limestone slab with an actual inscription, and two of them have been dug up, and you can go and read one today in a museum in Istanbul. It warned that no foreigner was to pass beyond the barrier into the enclosure, and it named the penalty, and the penalty was death.

Beyond that wall the courts belonged to Israel. Outside it there was one court, and one only, and it was enormous, and it was the only ground on earth where a man from anywhere else could come and pray to the God of Abraham.

The Court of the Nations. The one place the far-off had.

And on the week He died, Jesus walked into that court, and what He found in it was not people praying.

He found a market. Tables. Coins. Livestock. The apparatus of a functioning religious economy, entirely legal, entirely necessary, run by reasonable men solving a real problem, because pilgrims arrive with the wrong money and without animals and somebody has to sort that out.

Nobody had voted to fill the Court of the Nations. It was simply the only space big enough.

And He cleared it, and while He was clearing it He said one sentence, and the sentence was a quotation.

My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations.

He was quoting Isaiah. And Isaiah's line does not stop where we usually stop it.

The Court Nobody Swept

Isaiah wrote it for the ones who had already ruled themselves out

Go back and read the whole passage, because it is addressed, by name, to two kinds of person who had every reason to believe the house was not for them.

Let no foreigner who is bound to the Lord say, The Lord will surely exclude me from His people. And let no eunuch complain, I am only a dry tree. These I will bring to My holy mountain and give them joy in My house of prayer. My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations.Isaiah 56:3 and 7

Notice who is standing in that sentence long before any market arrived in it. You are holding a broom in a court that was named for the far-off before you were born, and the Holy Spirit has been keeping that ground open in your week whether or not anybody swept it.

Two people. One excluded by birth and one excluded by body, and both of them have already made the ruling on themselves before God says a word. Surely He will exclude me. I am only a dry tree.

And God does not argue with the sentence. He goes past it and issues His own.

Now hold those two things beside each other, because together they are the whole message.

There is a court, and it is for the ones who assume they are outside. And what fills it, every time, is not hostility. It is trade. It is arrangement. It is the ordinary, reasonable, necessary business of a working religious life, expanding gently into the only room that was left open.

That is what I want you to look at in your own house.

You have not barred anybody. I know you have not. Nobody reading this has hung a sign on a wall, and this house does not accuse a reader of a wickedness they have not committed.

But you have an open space, and it is worth asking what is standing in it.

The unhurried hour. The empty seat at the table. The Saturday. The margin in the week where somebody who is not like you could actually have found you. Look at what has quietly moved into it. Nothing wicked. Good things, mostly. A rota. A commitment. A very reasonable arrangement made by a reasonable person solving a real problem.

And here is where you stand, which is stronger than you feel. Isaiah says the house is called a house of prayer for all nations, and that naming was done by God and not by you, so the character of the room does not depend on your having got it right. You are not the architect. You are the one holding the broom, and the Holy Spirit is the One who has just shown you the floor.

The fire this house is named for fell in a building nobody respected in 1906, and the reason it could fall there is worth noticing: nothing else was in the room. It was a stable with sawdust and planks. There was no apparatus to move first.

Emptiness is not a failure of a space. In that court, emptiness was the point.

So you are not being asked to build anything. Isaiah 56 says the house is called a house of prayer for all nations, and the naming was finished long before you picked up a broom, and the Spirit is already standing in the part of your week you keep filling.

The breakthrough

So the turn is not a resolution. It is a broom.

You are not being asked to feel differently about anybody, and you are certainly not being told there is something rotten in your church, because this house does not hand out that verdict and I am not handing you one.

You are being asked to look at the one open space in your week and see what has quietly parked in it.

That is all. And you are equipped for it, because Scripture says the house is called a house of prayer for all nations, and the naming came from God, and the Spirit He poured out is the One standing in the empty part of your week already.

The court does not need building. It needs clearing. Those are extremely different jobs and only one of them is yours.

Declare this over yourself

Say these where you can hear yourself. Know what holds them up. This authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King. And you speak under His will, never over it. However He answers, and in whatever way He comes, the outcome is His.

  1. Clutter in the open court, you are good and useful and you are standing in ground that was never yours. Isaiah 56 says the house is called a house of prayer for all nations, so you can move and the space stays swept.
  2. Assumption that somebody far off has already ruled themselves out of my week, you are the oldest lie in that passage and you do not get to speak here. In the name of Jesus I silence you, and the Spirit is the One standing in the gap I keep filling.
  3. Lord, You had it written in Isaiah 56 that the house would be called a house of prayer for all nations, and Your Spirit has been standing in the open ground the whole time I was filling it. I am keeping one hour open this week with a real name in it, and an empty court was always the point.
