The Guest Who Lives Here

This message is for the feeling that you came in late and from outside, and that the promise really belongs to the ones who were born into it

He has been in that family for nine years and he still takes his shoes off at the door.

Everybody takes their shoes off. That is not the point. The point is the way he does it, which is the way a visitor does it, carefully, watching to see where the others put theirs.

Nine years. He knows the names of every cousin. He was there when the youngest was born. He carried the coffin at the funeral in the spring, on the front left, which is not a place they give to guests.

And he still, some part of him, believes he is being allowed.

You will see it in small things. He does not open the fridge without asking. He is the last to sit and the first to stand. If two people are talking he assumes he is interrupting. When somebody thanks him for something, he says a strange thing, the same strange thing, every time.

You are all very kind to me.

Nine years, and it is still kindness rather than family.

Now let me put that down and speak to you, because I did not tell you that story about a kitchen.

How long have you been in this house and still felt like you were visiting?

The Guest Who Lives Here

The address on the envelope was written wider than you think

Peter is standing in front of a crowd on the day the Church is born, and the crowd has just asked him what they should do, and he tells them, and then he says something that has kept a great many people up at night for the right reasons.

The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, for all whom the Lord our God will call.Acts 2:39

Count the clauses. There are three and you are the third, and the Holy Spirit did not attach you to the end of a promise as an afterthought. He had you written into it on the opening day, in front of a crowd, while the ink was still wet.

Three groups, and Peter names them in order, and the order is not an accident.

You. The ones standing here. The insiders, the people at the feast, the ones with the history.

Your children. The next lot, born into it, who will grow up with the story as furniture.

And all who are far off. Which is not a warm afterthought and not an extension of hospitality. It is the third clause of a promise, given equal grammatical weight with the other two, spoken on the first day, before anybody had time to work out a policy for outsiders.

You are in that third clause. Not permitted into it. Named in it, on the opening day, by the man who was still hoarse from preaching.

And I want you to feel how completely that undoes the thing you have been carrying, because what you have been carrying is not humility. It has the shape of humility and it wears its clothes, and it is actually a small quiet argument with the sentence God wrote.

The word says the promise is for those who are far off, and the Holy Spirit is the One who carried you the distance, and a man who is carried into a house by the owner does not stand in the hall calling it kindness.

Let me say it more plainly, because in my culture we say the important things twice.

You are not being tolerated. You have not been let in on a technicality. Scripture puts the far-off in the founding promise and the Spirit is living in you right now, and nothing about your late arrival has ever been a discount on your portion.

The whole fire this house is named for burned in a building nobody respected, in 1906, and the room filled up with people the city had already sorted. What witnesses could not get over was who was in it. Not one of them was there because they had qualified. The Spirit fell on the room, and the room was mostly latecomers and outsiders and people three months off a boat.

He never once poured out on a room and then checked how long anybody had been attending.

The breakthrough

Now here is the move, and it is not a lesson about self-esteem.

You are not going to argue yourself out of feeling like a guest. Nobody ever has. Feelings are not moved by evidence and you have had the evidence for years.

What you can do is stop agreeing with it out loud.

That is what a declaration is for. Not to manufacture a feeling. To put your mouth on the side of what God actually said, and let the feeling catch up in its own time, which it does, eventually, always.

Acts 2 named the far-off in the same breath as the insiders and the children. The Holy Spirit who was poured out on all people did not pour a smaller measure for the ones who arrived late. You are inside the sentence, and you have been since the first day the sentence existed.

Stop wiping your feet on your own doorstep.

Declare this over yourself

Say these where you can hear yourself. Know what holds them up. This authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King. And you speak under His will, never over it. However He answers, and in whatever way He comes, the outcome is His.

  1. Guest, you are not what I am in this house and you have not been for a long time. Acts 2 says the promise is for you, and for your children, and for all who are far off, and I was named in the third clause on the opening day.
  2. Habit of calling my own family kind, you have made me a visitor in a room where I carried the coffin. In the name of Jesus I put you out at the door, and the Holy Spirit who carried me the whole distance is not going to be told He delivered a parcel to the wrong address.
  3. Lord, Acts 2 says the promise is for all who are far off, and Your Spirit carried me the whole distance before anybody had time to draft a policy about people like me. I am standing in my own kitchen tonight with my hands up, and I am not asking to be let in.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
